Dives Way off Key WestThe NorthwindIf you're fan of Mel Fisher and his plights, you might be interested in this wreck, which was originally park of Mel's Fleet. The Northwind was a metal tugboat used by Mel, belonging to Mel Fisher's Treaure salvors Inc., which sank while the group was working on finding the Atocha, Mel's herculean dramatic pursuit of a lifetime. This wreck is certainly very tragic, since it took down Mel's son and daughter-in-law with it, in 1975. They had been anchored, and apparently there was a leak in the bulkhead, and this combined with a malfunctioning fuel valve, caused the vessel to capsize in 40 feet of water. It's located three and a half miles soutwest of the Marquesas.
